Look 585 Revival

Black matte paint. It’s always in fashion. It’s totally simple. It’s undoubtedly the best choice for a sleek, understated cool frame. This Look 585 carbon frame arrived at Ruckus for a very small repair, a bottle cage-mount replacement, but the customer wanted to take the opportunity to make something big out of it. As you can see from the image above, the original frame (although not our customer’s actual build-out) is glossy, starkly contrasted and bold, with overt white logos. They saw a red frame and they wanted to paint it black.

Even the smallest details matter to us. The original red and black frame had solid bold graphics, but the customer thought this to be a bit of an eyesore after owning it for a while, so we suggested a flat black paint scheme with only outlined logos. It still has a nice contrast but now much more understated and cleanly done. You can also see the sharp masking behind the logos that separates the twill weave from the rest of the frame. These graphics are incredibly difficult to apply, less alone create from scratch like we do with all of our logos. People often ask why we don’t just contact companies asking or .pngs. Well, all frames depart factories with subtle graphical variation; the heights and placements are all different, so even if we had the original logo file, it wouldn’t matter much.

The repair and graphics application is an a process of precision but we appreciated it as a vehicle to drive another full re-creation. As we live amidst winter’s sodden grasp for another few months out here in Portland, it was nice to see a glimmer of that spring-like revival around the shop. We take every opportunity for repair as a chance to remake a frame, but are truly stoked when we are able to give bikes that Ruckus touch. We do it like no other can.
