Pinarello Paris Toptube and Chainstay Repairs

This carbon fiber repair case came to us as the result of a dreaded roof rack accident striking again. These are more common type crashes than you think and undoubtedly devastating to the structural integrity of the frame. This Pinarello Paris repair came into the shop after such an accident following a long ride on a hot day. That post-summer-ride haze is real! Since the frame was already on its way the customer also wanted us to investigate and possibly repair their damaged chainstay area as well. We were happy to oblige.

Somehow, the handlebars and fork cleared the garage but the toptube took the brunt of the impact. After sanding away the obviously damaged area, we discovered quite the impressive carnage. The impact damage resulted in several large holes through the carbon and a spider web of cracking laminate. This repair needed several layers of carbon to match the structural layup of the bike, and also received an aesthetic weave layer to nearly perfectly match the original frame.

The area of chain suck also looked visually damaged, and a resulting UT scan found damage through 7 layers of carbon. We were able to map out exactly where the damage had spread so it was easy to remove in in the wet sanding booth. Our ultrasound scan also allows us to find the depth of the laminate and recreate it later on in our process.

After much scanning and damage removal, the Pinarello was finally ready for repair. It was not easy to recreate the layup structure around Pinarello’s famous asymmetric tubes, but we were able to recreate it brilliantly. We ultrasound scan bikes and fully remove all the damage to make certain the frame is completely safe to ride again and as close to the original structure as possible.

As always, we finish all repairs by matching the paint and decals of the original frame. For this repair, we expertly blended white to match the coat on this Paris and left some aesthetic weave sticking out behind the exactly replicated decals of the frame.
